Hallo everybody, my name is Giorgio Pons and I live in Morbio Inferiore, Switzerland, I am an ornithology enthusiast and I breed Gloster canaries. Gloster canaries can be either tuft (corona) or plain head (consort) variety, so the best mating is between corona and consort. Besides the tuft, their main characteristic is the minute height, to the extent that the current standard sets its length at 11 centimeters. Visiting several Italian exhibitions, I found positive the fact that the Glosters shown were closer to the standard height. What I found instead disappointing was that the shortening of the birds had led to smaller headed animals. I therefore concluded that we had to give up with those large soup-plate like tufts and those consorts that could compete with the head of the Norwich. Unfortunately, most of the male birds present in many exhibitions are always too long, exceeding a height of 12-12.5 cm. Female birds, more tapered and chubbier, reach smaller sizes, 11.5-12 cm. It might be a good idea, in not a too far future, to arrange for separate results for male and female birds, rule which is already applied in specialized exhibitions. The Gloster is a canary with cheerful and lively temper. Prolific and robust is also suitable for inexpert breeders. The best mating which maintain their main characteristics is frosted x frosted. The most common colours are green and yellow, even though breeders fancy very much slate-white and cinnamon variations. I recommend that young and new enthusiasts wishing to approach canary sport breeding choose this pleasant variety……the Gloster! |
